This almost happened to me. The auger got stuck and spun rapidly and we lost our grip. We couldn't pull it back up and running it spun it lower, so we slowly slid it to the top, twisting it by hand and then it got stuck. So we went to get tools and as we were walking back, and whole thing fell right in and down. We recovered it though.
