Literal because having good interactions will still send someone to hell, because in good perfect standards we all fall short, but that's why our eternity rest completely on the completed work of Jesus death, burial and resurrection... It is metaphoric because you can have good intentions on earth towards others and still have people despise and hate you, but even if you make the difference in one life you have made a difference.
