Internet picture: a female Mandarin duck, flanked by two male Mandarins. All three have white camouflage below, to protect them from attacks from beneath while in the water. The female (typically larger) is also well camouflaged on top to protect her and also her eggs and chicks from predators such as hawks. The males, however, have very strikingly patterned and colored plumage and beaks. This is probably the result of intersexual selection, based on female preference for ornamented males as mates.
