[image deleted]If Thomas Jefferson were here today to explain the Second Amendment, here's what he might say:

"We created the Second Amendment for two reasons: first - so our fledgling nation would have a virtual "reserve army" amongst the citizenry in the event we had to defend ourselves. This is the "well-regulated militia" described in the Second Amendment. The second & more obscure purpose was to be one of the "checks & balances" we designed into our new government system. I felt having an armed citizenry was a powerful deterrent against the ambitions of any future tyrannical government that might ascend to power. Since members of a "well regulated militia" were required to provide their own firearms, we made it clear in the language of the Second Amendment that "the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."
