Pour in a lot of baking soda, then some vinegar, wait and let it foam and dissolve stuff. Helps somewhat. Maybe do it twice or three times.

And also make sure your plumbing can handle it. I did this on my garbage disposal a few times and once the pressure transient blew out the seal at the junction with the main drain because it was all cheap undersized plastic.
