No religion is a religion of peace, because religions are full of people and people like to manipulate and fight each other.

Christianity doesn't claim to be a religion of peace.

No. The religion doesn't. But Jesus Christ is referred to as the Prince of Peace. A shame that so many followers forget that in the name of political expediency.

Christianity is not a pacifist religion.

I refer the honourable gentleman to the answer I gave some moments ago.

The title "Prince of Peace" refers to his mission to bring sinners to peace with God. It doesn't override other Bible passages that reveal that civil governments have the authority to wield the sword.

While of course these Civil Governments were not "Christian".

OK..maybe Christianity has a checkered, middle_aged past.( Like 500-1000.years ago) but in modern, relevant time...NOONE does more for the poor, non_practitioners of their faith, disabled, etc. Than Christians. Noone's quicker to distance themselves from and denounce people that perform atrocities in the name I their religion(McVeigh, Hitler, Jim Jones, etc.) Either. But of course, Christians will always be a go- to easy target for narrow minded trendy closed minded cowardly haters.

I don't argue with the good we do. However, in the eyes of a very large proportion of the world, the 'Christian' West is seen as an aggressor who continually interferes in the lives of other nations for economic gain and their own 'national interest'.

However, my main point is that simply demonizing people and calling them 'savages' and the like rarely leads to piece. Instead we become savages ourselves, treating people as less than human and using words like 'collateral damage' to sugar the pill.

It's an extremely serious sin to take the name/authority of Christ and put him behind an ideology that he doesn't support.

You made a good meme recently, about reading the whole Bible with an open mind and coming to your own conclusions (the Ain't Nobody Got Time for That one). People who take that step will see that there are some situations where war is called for, as one of the means for people in authority to work towards justice in an evil age. To invoke Christ's name to support absolute pacifism is as much of an abuse of his name as to invoke it for war-mongering purposes.

Just to be clear, I'm definitely not saying Christians can't be pacifists for reasons of personal conviction. Christianity allows considerable freedom of conscience. While there are some situations where pacifism might be unethical, in some situations it is morally acceptable.

What I'm saying is that Christianity itself is not a pacifist religion. You don't have to be a pacifist to support Christ whole-heartedly. Using the name of Christ to support a political ideology like pacifism is a misuse of his name.

I don't see pacifism as a political ideology, but as a personal choice in response to my Lord and saviour who not only said things like 'do not resist an evil person', bit also peaceably surrendered himself to a murderous regime. My choice, but one that I believe is authentically CHRISTian.

I wasn't trying to give you a hard time about it. I hope it didn't come across that way.

I don't have any problem with you making that choice for yourself. In fact, I think it's a brave choice.

I would only have a problem with you saying that followers of Christ must choose it as the only possible way of authentically being Christian (if that's what you're saying). In the first century, there were followers of Christ who were soldiers as well - and that remains true today.

If you take the whole Bible's view, you'll see a much more complicated view presented about the issues of war and peace. Each Christian must have individual freedom to follow his/her conviction in the matter. It's true that God is good and abhors violence, but I believe, from reading the Bible, that there are some situations where military action by the proper authority is the best and most ethical choice.
