Nobody can be in good standing with God on the basis of what they have done in this life. Christ's death and resurrection is the only way.

That is one of the most damaging beliefs to Christianity in the history of Christianity. We do not check our brains at the door when we come to Jesus. He created our minds and He does not expect us to believe in Him in contradiction to our intelligence. Science is continually "proving" things that the Bible has said for Millennia. Our God is so far above the most intelligent people that has ever existed. Do you really believe that He can't handle our minds?

I think it depends how he means it.

You're right that the gospel is intelligible and comprehensible - otherwise no rational adult could be saved (since you can't be saved without understanding the gospel).

But if he meant in the sense of, "no one can understand the depths of God's love in the gospel," or something along those lines, I think that's true.

In one sense we understand it (and Christianity is a reasonable faith), but in one sense there are things about God and the gospel we'll never fully understand.
