The statistics show that applicants actually test positive at a lower rate than the drug use of the general population. The national drug use rate is 9.4 percent. In these states, however, the rate of positive drug tests to total welfare applicants ranges from 0.002 percent to 8.3 percent, but all except one have a rate below 1 percent. Meanwhile, they’ve collectively spent nearly $1 million on the effort, and millions more may have to be spent in coming years."

Because it's a scam to scare you into believing the government has a right to dictate what you do with your private life.

If my tax dollars are being used to pay for someone's private life and they choose not to work, then it is most definitely my business. If you are truly unable to work and need medical marijuana because you are sick or suffering PTSD, especially if you are a military veteran, I have no issue. But if you are on welfare but are able to work and simply choose not to and can afford to get high, you can afford food and don't need to be on welfare.

The link is telling that it's non issue that is costing more of your tax dollars than it was meant to save due to economic prejudices.
In other words, poor shaming.

I'm not poor shaming anyone. There are people out there who genuinely need assistance, who can't work for physical and or psychological reasons and those people I have no problem being helped with tax dollars. Unfortunately, there are those who abuse the system, people who can work but would rather sit on their asses all day[or work under the table], get hammered, and not contribute to society. Those people are stealing from those who need assistance and should be shamed because what they are doing is wrong.
