it used to be for when popular things were released, to guarantee you a copy should they be sold out or horrendous lines. but if it was too popular still, the pre-order stock would even be sold out. i only play on pc these days, you can either play early (alpha/beta) or play on release date when the servers are crashing lol. dunno what it's like buying a new console game these days
