I would say better than a contract. I mean, real contracts are designed to have 10 million loopholes for big companies and nothing but trouble for the little guys.
I don't want to go back to the days of the old West.. where everybody was packing a gun in public, and had an itchy trigger finger... but back then, at least people had morals and standards..
