That's like saying the word "Party" comes from "part-a-n***er" in which white folks would chose a slave to have "part of his body" cut off. Just because a word was used during a certain time doesn't mean it pertains to said events. There's no proof that the word "picnic" was used to refer to the act of lynching.

Just because Snopes debunks it does not mean a Professor would not make such a claim in a class room.
