its more of a tradition. our grandparents depended of guns for food and nasty critters. dads teach kids and so on. hunting now is a sport but about 40% here depend on the wild game for supplement. Not saying a 9 year old gets a pistol but 80% have a squirrel gun. there are rual areas here that you better have a gun handy.
