Ryan Abbot – January 2nd 1863
Hurrah for the new year and what a wonderful year for me it was! I promised I would write more, but I’ve been so caught up in things! The officer of our regiment decided to draft a few people into the sharpshooter regiment. I was one of the first ones chosen. I have begun training and now I can kill a man from 35 yards! My instructor has begun to see a spark of courage and bravery in me and I want to fight more! By the way, The bigwigs decided to relieve General Ambrose as the general of the army of the Potomac and replace him with General Joseph Hooker. Also, just yesterday the Emancipation Proclamation was finally passed! Now the British won’t even want to recognize the Confederacy as a country and this minimizes the chances of Britain helping the Confederates. I think that further increases our chances for Unity to prevail!
