Well, ahem, the fetus is surrounded by amniotic fluid, and they can't just live in the mother's stomach their whole life can they? What I am saying is that, we NEED oxygen because A, the fluid is only there to help the fetus grow, it's not like the baby could live there their whole life anyways. And B, oxygen is not a drug, it is, in a sense, the amniotic fluid, because it also helps our cells grow and produce. So, we do not become 'addicted to oxygen'. We need it just like we needed the fluid. It makes sense to have a replacement since you physically could not grow and live your mom's belly your whole life.
