Historical Context of His Arrest and Downfall
• Arrest in 1500: King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella sent royal investigator Francisco de Bobadilla to Hispaniola following mounting complaints of extreme brutality, mismanagement, and tyranny.
• In Chains: Bobadilla had Columbus and his brothers arrested, stripped of their properties, and shipped back to Spain in iron chains in October 1500.
• Loss of Power: While the Spanish monarchs eventually released Columbus from prison and restored some of his wealth, they permanently stripped him of his political and administrative authority (forbidding him from ever serving as governor again).
