You can't make someone love you by giving them more of what they already don't appreciate. But that's everyone's instinct. Something's off, so you give more, more effort, more patience, more of yourself, like the problem is a quantity issue. You just haven't hit the numbers yet.
I've done this, watched friends do it, it never works, not once. Because if someone doesn't value what you're giving them, doubling it doesn't make it any more valuable. It just makes it cheaper. You've told them there's an unlimited supply and no cost to ignoring it.
And you end up exhausted and resentful, and in a worse position than when you started. The uncomfortable truth is that some people just don't value what you bring. Not because it isn't valuable, but because they're not the person for it. More was never the answer.
