Edwin Epps became a traitor to America; Support for the Confederacy: Epps owned a cotton plantation in Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana. During the American Civil War (1861–1865), Louisiana seceded from the United States to join the Confederate States of America. Like most Southern planters, Epps supported the rebellion against the U.S. government to preserve the institution of slavery. From the perspective of the Union, all citizens who sided with the Confederacy were committing acts of treason against the United States
