Italy did not exist as a unified nation-state in the 15th century. He was a citizen of the Republic of Genoa. Modern Italians and Italian-Americans claim him as part of their shared heritage because Genoa is located in modern Italy.

Columbus spent most of his adult life operating out of Portugal and Spain, not Genoa. However, he was widely condemned, arrested, and sent back to Europe in chains by the Spanish Crown in 1500 due to his brutal and tyrannical governorship of Hispaniola.

The idea that Columbus was a converso (a Spanish Jew who converted to Catholicism to escape the Inquisition) has circulated among some historians for decades. In October 2024, a highly publicized Spanish television documentary claimed that partial DNA analysis of his remains suggested Sephardic Jewish ancestry from the Western Mediterranean. However, scientists and forensic geneticists have dismissed this conclusion. The underlying data has never been published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal or made available for independent validation. The overwhelming historical consensus based on written archives remains that he was born to a Christian family of weavers in Genoa.
