During the American Civil War, Southern Unionists in Arkansas—concentrated largely in the mountainous Ozarks, Boston Mountains, and northern counties like Searcy County—remained loyal to the United States. Over 9,000 white Arkansans and 5,500 Black Arkansans joined the U.S. Army, facing intense guerrilla warfare and persecution from Confederate neighbors.
