On September 11, 2001, 19 militants associated with the extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial airplanes in the United States. They intentionally crashed two planes into the World Trade Center in New York City, one into the Pentagon near Washington, D.C., and a fourth into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
