In X's world, there exists a being that appears to be Sonic or a vessel resembling him. He is nicknamed Schrodinger's Hedgehog because nobody there actually knows if it's X in disguise, another victim genuinely in need of help, or some creation of X that resembles Sonic.
After David beats X in their fight, he seeks to redeem him and slowly but surely bring him to peace. The other souls who have been turned into Metal X's guardians at this point however, do not believe X can be redeemed, and will absolutely not go near him.
I did not change his design because I wanted the "Schrodinger's hedgehog" thing to still apply to him, just in a different way. He could be X disguised by David so that the others will trust him, or he could just be another vessel-turned-guardian. That's also why he represents freedom. Sonic in general just represents freedom, but if it is X in disguise, then it can also specifically represent the freedom from his past sins against the souls.
