did he have to die to forgive us? he forgave people with no blood sacrifice by simply speaking to them.

Forgiveness is when someone gives up their right to get even with you, but that doesn't stop the natural and judicial consequences that still come with sin. Sin carries a cost, especially against a holy and infinite God, so someone absolutely has to pay for it if God is to be considered just.
But in His love for us, God put the punishment on Jesus, instead of us. Jesus paid the penalty for what we deserved.

He did, and He placed it onto Christ.
Why that way? I don't know, but what I do know is that sin is often worse than we think it is and its impact is real. If justice is real then that means punishment for evil also has to be real.
A loving God will take on the punishment of a sin for you.
A just God cannot let someone get away with sin.
God is both loving and just.
