The apocalypse came upon the humans, and some created an underground space, named Alterna, and due to climate change, it was the only habitable area to live in. They were miserable, so they created a barrier around Alterna from the fluids of squids that held their memories. The next generations of humans, however, brought upon their own demise by firing up the rocket in the center and shattering the crystals that kept them protected, due to the curiosity of what may lie above. These crystals fell into the water and gave squids intelligence and memories, and after evolution, Inklings and Octolings were created. squids shoot ink at each other; Splatoon fans when someone asks "What is Splatoon?"
