If you’re asking biologically: someone is Black because of genetics and ancestry.
Human skin color is mainly determined by melanin, a pigment produced by cells in the skin. People whose ancestors come from regions with high sunlight exposure (especially parts of Africa) evolved to produce more melanin. Higher melanin levels protect against strong ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.
Over many thousands of years:
Areas near the equator → more sun → darker skin evolved as protection
Areas farther from the equator → less sun → lighter skin evolved to help produce vitamin D
So being Black isn’t caused by anything a person does — it’s an inherited trait shaped by long-term adaptation to environment.
If you meant this question in a different way (socially, culturally, etc.), let me know and I can explain that too.
