We have people like hasan piker that are literally only anchor babies for their parents and they act nothing like actual americans and hate the united states

If you hate everything about a country like usa (bad bunny literally said he wouldn't tour in america for "political reasons" which is BS) and you're only from a territory that doesn't even act like anywhere else in america and is only owned by america, I wouldnt really call you "american"

Being "American" is a legal status layered on top of a ton of different cultures. Being born in the U.S. or its territories makes you American in the boring legal sense, regardless of whether you like the government or not, and criticizing the country has always been a very American thing to do someone can be a citizen and still feel culturally different or critical. Saying someone isn’t American because they criticize the U.S. turns it into gatekeeping instead of an actual argument 😭✌

today about 25% of hawaii doesn't speak English at home, which I'm sure has only decreased since a good 80 years ago.

my point is that it's f**king stupid and you need to jump through a bunch of hoops to say people who were born in the United States aren't American because

1: They don't speak English primarily, so by that metric about 22% of our country isn't American

2: They dislike America, so by that metric most of the country isn't American

Most of Puerto Rico wants statehood anyway I have no idea what your point is

iirc that one referendum saying where a LOT of Puerto Ricans wanted statehood had a low turnout and the ones who wanted independence intentionally were absent from it

both the turnout and voting percentage to become a state became higher in 2024 than it was in 2020

quite a few of them don't want to become a state for taxation reasons

also it was a naval base so a lot of people there weren't even Hawaiian...

My point with the label american was simply that it should be used as a cultural label too and I think it's been spread too thin

Puerto rico is a lot more similar to other caribbean countries than to us states, the only reason why they would even have a chance of calling themselves american is because of american imperialism, they shouldn't be a state, they should be independent
