I‘m not a big fan of German cinema, but there are some good movies
If you want a comedy with offensive humor I suggest The Shoe of Manitou
If you want a historical drama I suggest The Lives of Others
Some must see German movies that changed the course of movie history are Metropolis and M

In my opinion it starts off as a mid movie but the ending is one of the best I’ve ever seen

Metropolis is available on YouTube since it’s a 99 year old movie
M might be available on YouTube as well
