Well, that’s how it was intended to be played. A completely blind playthrough would think that it’s a normal rpg, and only realize later that these monsters have lives and can be spared for a better ending. It’s how the game is structured. However, (in the beginning) the community started to hate on streamers that did neutral or even genocide. It’s literally a game about freedom of choice, players should be able to do what they want.
