How do you do construction/sketch hands or do you just go right into the shape of the hand

basically i block out the shape of the palm and where the thumb extrudes from, draw in the knuckles and line the tendons, and then make kinda cylinders for each segment of each finder
and make another layer on top and make everything actually look like a hand
