CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR — THE SOUND THAT DOESN’T BELONG
They climbed out of the rubble one by one, breathing hard, covered in dust, shaken in ways none of them were willing to admit out loud.
The bunker door thudded closed behind them with a hollow echo.
The wasteland air—cold, sharp, and metallic—hit them like a relief.
Until they heard it.
A soft, distant thrum.
Faint.
Rhythmic.
Almost blending with the wind.
But unmistakably the same pulse from the machine.
Yoshi’s eyes widened.
“…Tell me that’s just in my head.”
But Norther heard it too.
So did Goober.
So did Mewo.
No one said the word “Resonance,” but everyone was thinking it.
It wasn’t coming from the bunker.
It was coming from the open world.
As if something out there… had answered.
