The reason that coins were made with ridged sides was because, when they were made of inherently valuable materials, like silver and gold, people would shave the sides of their coins to get some of the gold off, then still use the coin as if it were worth the original amount. Nowadays, since most coins aren't made of gold or silver, there isn't much reason to do it.
