look up how christmas was originally created, it was a pagan gods son that had died by a boar on december 25th and his blood went on a fir tree, so the mother known as easter (also a pagan holiday but thats a different topic) said that the city that she was queen of had to put up a tree decorated in red on that day from then on, then the catholic i believe had said "our religion is too boring, we need people to stay, lets make it fun by taking this pagan holiday and just say its celebrating the birth of Christ even tho he wasnt born in december"
