Christianity grows under persecution, shrinks when times are good. People want to be a part of something that has value. Historically, Christianity has had moments when it was "popular" to be a Christian, which inflates the numbers falsely. I would venture that maybe half of professing Christians have no idea what Jesus said regarding the receiving of himself and his subsequent teachings about himself. Most follow the teachings, but not the teacher. Christianity is much smaller than numbers would suggest.
