What is cardboard?

Cardboard is a generic term for heavy paper-based products. Their construction can range from a thick paper known as paperboard to corrugated fiberboard, made of multiple plies of material. Natural cardboards can range from grey to light brown in color, depending on the specific product; dyes, pigments, printing, and coatings are available.

Primarily, cardboard is used for packaging and shipping, due to its low cost and structure. However, cardboard is also used in a lot of diy projects including but not limited to: halloween costumes, pethouses, furniture, pots, and even product displays.

What is the history of cardboard?

The term "cardboard" was first used in the 1800's, when a writer named anne brontë used it in her book called "the tenant of wildfell hall".

Cardboard first gained traction (atleast in the united states) when the kellogg brothers used it to hold cereal. They started adding wax paper around the cereal and putting inside the box. This was the birth of the modern cereal box.

John W. Keickhefer revolutionized cardboard shipping, mainly when he used it for milk cartons somewhere around 1930-60 (i dont really know about him so please forgive me)

What are the different types of cardboard?

1. Paperboard.

Paperboard is a thick paper-based material. While there is no rigid differentiation between paper and paperboard, paperboard is generally thicker (usually over 0.30 mm, 0.012 in, or 12 points) than paper and has certain superior attributes such as foldability and rigidity. Paperboard can be single- or multi-ply.

2. Corrugated fiberboard

Corrugated fiberboard is a combination of paperboards, usually two flat liners and one inner fluted corrugated medium. This is what most of us know as good old cardboard. All awesome and stuff
