After the Great War, Dadaism and Surrealism became powerful forces. They were both rebellious movements against the conventional system. Dadaism was based on Dada, started in Zurich and ridiculing everything and championing the absurd. Surrealism was born out of this, creating the absurd as well. However, Surrealists was also inspired by Freud and claimed to release the power of the subconscious. Surrealist artists claimed to create their works from the subconscious or even sometimes by accident. Their works showed how things might look in a dream, with geometric figures and distorted images clashing with their backgrounds.
