"(Character)'s family wasn't a fan of her being a humane person, so (Character) had decided that America would be a better place to be herself. Whoever told her that was high as hell, because: A) It's 1936, and the Depression is still going strong B) She is a female teenager, and C) She is a Japanese IMMIGRANT teenager. Most people in charge (read: white people) aren't too keen on those things, unfortunately.
(Before character does something dumb) "I'm sure you know this was a bad idea."
(Talking about a thing that's about to happen) "Be patient, you toddler, you’ll learn. It would spoil the surprise if I told you now."
