well they kind of are. we need the 2nd amendment and every person a gun in case something really bad happens like the u.s. government gets too tyrannical. also a lot of cases of gun violence are through illegally acquired means of firearms, so just banning citizens from owning guns sounds good in theory but in practice would make it a lot harder for them to defend themselves
