Why?

It's not harmful that much, but it's if the animal is feral or old/has a bad disease

Usually it's because the animal is either too geriatric to live a happy life, has an incurable disease such as cancer, or is rabid/feral

Killed humanely to either put them out of their misery or to prevent them from hurting people again (like if your dog attacks someone)
