The shark subspecies of ASCII-oid always had a tradition of making piercings in their tail to hold large tools like spears, but ASCII-oids regenerate, so over time their body just switched off the gene to repair injury in that area so they wouldn't have to cause themselves pain, although the pain was more like a mildly sharp stinging cramp.

So in other words their body just straight up ditched healing for that spot. But it was permanently like a scar/scab.

But the tradition has been long abandoned so meh
