Leonard Cohen was a Quebecan Canadian, and bilingual. He had written several volumes of poetry and 2 novels published before being asked to record some songs. Kind of a French Canadian Bob Dylan.
He moved to the Greek island of Hydra, where he specialised in sleeping with his “muses” and getting stoned. I believe he tripped on acid as well, but it was the 70s and 80s son de rigouer
