Last before a springtime merry,
I woke to heavenly sound, quite stressed.
A piano hast ceased my sleep
She played aloud, with melodious voice,
Her tune beautiful to hear.
I stood up softly, attentively,
Walking to garden, then to woods.
Spotting the woman with song,
I found myself smiling
Sweet as a summer breeze
She placed a chair, and gave her name
But I refused, instead asking for her hand
‘Thy melody art beautiful as stars,’
I claimed, ‘A ray of light on a dismal sky!’
She looked away, her smile gone
And within a moment she was air.
No piano, save for a mark in earth
Was left of her sugared presence
So I returned, back to my house,
My hands empty and sullen.
I never saw her again,
Though her eyes still meet me at night
And if I see her, music burrows within me
So spring blew far, summer setting warm
Though she would not, will not return
And I find myself playing piano,
Wondering of this girl’s song
For our loss of an angel,
Whom the gods named ‘Calypso’
