Since you are writing a story and building a world of your own, let me give a you a tip I learned through writing of my own story, I learned that it should contain both internal and external input. Both are equally important. Outside ideas should be considered and processed to match your own style. While both me and Sketchy agreed on freely using each other's characters in our own timelines, hence in any scenario we are getting internal and external ideas. I am writing a part of my story, so I tell him about it, the stuff that I tell him is the internal concept. While the few considerable tweaks, additions and removals are external feedback. This way your world feels natural and not forced, since your ideas can be perceived as great progression, most of the time it is not, outside eyes are great at spotting those.
TLDR; from my experience it is great to have both your own ideas and concepts with your friends', since it allows your story to be a more detailed and believable world.
