Having a dedicated drift button makes sense because you’re not always drifting. But you’re always going forward or backward, and the joystick can already do those things.
Far Cry 2 kept the driving controls on just the joystick and it worked wonderfully for that game.
my guess is because you can't keep accelerating while steering at the same time, because when you push the joystick to left or right, you're not pushing it forward anymore
WHY DO DRIVING GAMES MAKE THE GAS BUTTON THE RIGHT TRIGGER WHEN YOU COULD JUST LET THEM PRESS FORWARD ON THE JOYSTICK? PEOPLE ALREADY INSTINCTIVELY PRESS FORWARD ON THE JOYSTICK ANYWAY EVEN THOUGH IT DOESN’T DO ANYTHING.
