I’ve always found the comedic value in this image coming from how absurd it would be to accuse the poster of farming karma, when they are talking about a very real and deeply serious issue they might be facing. I never even thought about how they upvoted the comment, and I now see that there is a non-negligible amount of people that actually think this way.

This entire post is only two sentences long.

They could have been distressed when writing said post. If I turned out to be trans and got kicked out of my parent’s for the same reason, I would too.

If you were going through an event like this, you’d want to reach out to someone. And some ppl may choose to reach out online.

Doesn’t the suicide hotline sell your data n shit? I mean I get social media does too, but you talk about the most vulnerable stuff when on the hotline.

Also I’ve heard that they sometimes escalate the situation by getting the cops involved (not often a great idea), like with what happened to Jeffrey Parker.

People would be naturally hesitant to call the hotline, afraid that it could lead to undesirable consequences. Most people would try and look into it, before seeing all of this, along with personal negative anecdotes from people who’ve tried it and it not working out, and decide not to call it.

Either that or, what’s most likely in this case, choose not to call the hotline at all.

Even if we were to put aside all the reasons as to why calling 988 might not be the smartest option, and we say that it is the most “logical” decision to make in this situation, people are famously not very logical.
