okay so like 4 weeks ago my friend (we'll call him Tim) had a lithium computer battery for some reason. he showed it tome and as i was stabbing my eraser with my compass (circle drawing thing) he told me i could stab the battery. If this was any other classs i would have said no. but i was so bored that i agreed and poked/ripped a few holes in it ising my compass. he then put it back in his laptop bag.I then told him to get rid of it as it was a fire hazard. He didnt get rid of it. Luckily, the battery was fine and nothing more happened to it until today.
Today, Tim bought in another battery and i pretended to stab it (i didnt actually). He only had this second battery because it was faulty. He then proceeded to place THE FAULTY BATTERY on top of the battery i had ripped weeks prior. Again, I told him it was a bad idea and a fire hazard. He again didnt listen. Later that class, Tim opened his laptop bag and smoke started billowing out of it. instead of following fire procedure(i was right next to him), i grabbed my laptop and laptop bag because i thought the batteries had set fire. we were all told to go outside, and more teachers came along to help. It turned out there was just smoke, no fire, but when teachers shook out his laptop bag, the charred remains of the batteries and some sligtly burnt paper and books came out. thankfully his laptop was unharmed.
theory time: I think that inside the case, the bottom battery(broken) was still giving off heat as it had done for weeks and heated up the faulty battery until it caught fire, albeit a small one, but enought to go through all the oxygen in the case before dying out. I think that when Tim opened the case and let the smoke out, the fire was long gone. However, if Tim had left the case open, I think it could have easily spread and eventually engulf the room. Again: AFTER BOTH STABBING THE BATTERY AND AFTER HE STACKED THEM, I TOLD HIM IT WAS A BAD IDEA AND FIRE HAZARD TO HAVE IT AROUND. HE DID NOT LISTEN TO MY WARNINGS.
