Sometimes it is pests in walls, a piece of dust, tiny bug or spider, their own insanity and in personal experience it can be paranormal although negative behavior positions, growling, spitting, hissing etc tends to follow or they run away. Saw a dog in my friend's grandma's house near Parkersburg WV when I was near 14 sit up in the middle of the room growling at nothing and the cat they had wouldn't even enter the house. Safe to say we left the house because it was creepy. So not impossible to be seeing that but usually is followed by behavior, avoidance of room or home or hiding.

I’ve had a couple of dogs that have done things like that. Growling at nothing that we could see or hear and barking at something unseen. We’d go outside to check and could never find anything. I’ve also watched numerous tv shows and read stories where people have experienced that sort of thing with their pets. It’s very eerie.

I got told to "Get out" at 3 am in that house. Her grandpa kept his job at the nuclear plant in Moundsville where I was originally from but didn't want to live away from her grandma why was a midwife and something happened where she ended up moving to Parkersburg mainly because Moundsville was pretty small and more business in a larger city. Anyway he liked driving so he got up at 4 am to drive to work 5 days a week which he actually liked doing. I got out of bed and sat in the safest feeling room in the house and went back home with him. That hour after hearing a loud gravely voice similar to Amityville movie "get out" to the priest seemed like a long time. I've experienced a lot more of such things since Moundsville is a portal to hell itself. That stuff is real but I deny human haunts. Evil presence has a feel and some are worse than others but none are human spirits but only appear that way to trick people into communication. Bad idea.

I’ve heard and seen a lot of testimonials like yours. I believe that such things exist. There’s a spiritual world that tries to exert its influence over people. Mostly things on the evil side are what I’ve heard and read about the most. Demonic forces pretending to be the spirits of deceased loved ones. Trying to maintain a constant presence and destroy the lives of those that they attempt to inhabit.
