Nah, there's a difference, the koopa king is from the older generations, including the old as hell Mario show

I think it might be like GTA. gta 4 and gta 5 are not set in the same universe as the other games because rockstar didn't pay much attention to the lore in older games as they didn't expect the games to be famous for the story. It's likely that Nintendo did the same thing for the same reason.
