Imo: Joseph played most of his role as the leader of the group as they traveled. He’s used his smarts throughout part 3 and even solo’d an enemy user. I think he did his best during the climax but knew he couldn’t do much.

I mean, what’s thorny vines going to do against a guy who stop time? Which is why he did his best to warn the others instead of face DIO head on.
