TPP, or Twitch Plays Pokemon, was a social experiment ran on Twitch in 2014 where an anonymous Australian coder programmed Pokemon Red to be played by viewers in chat on Twitch. The viewers would input commands like A, B, up, down, left, right, etc. to progress in the game. The experiment became wildly popular and the community that formed around it wrote lore about the story of TPP.
The way the lore went was that the player character Red was the embodiment of the hive mind. In lore, the demonic Lord Dome sent the false prophet Flareon to force Red into a democratic system where Dome ruled with an iron fist, causing the experience to feel monotonous. The greater hive mind rebelled against Lord Dome’s control and turned to Lord Helix, the embodiment of friendly chaos. Helix sent Bird Jesus, disguised as a Pidgeot, to lead Red through his journey until Helix could be resurrected and Dome could be vanquished. Along the way, the false prophet attacked Red brutally in an event known as Bloody Sunday, where several team members like Abby the Charmeleon and Dux the Farfetch’d were brutally killed by the false prophet. Bird Jesus persevered, vanquishing the false prophet and, in his ashes, reassembling a more powerful team. The final team to defeat the league was Bird Jesus, guided by a redirected Lord Helix, and accompanied by AA-j, Bird Jesus’s angel, The Fonz, a king of sorts, Air Jordan, the king’s prince, and an ALL TERRAIN VENOMOTH, someone thought to be useless until he slayed Lance’s Dragonite, earning him the name of the Dragon Slayer. With their combined efforts, Red and the hive mind became the champions of Kanto.
Praise be to Helix
