Makes sense. That was a Chrysler/Mitsubishi Sigma (commmonly referred to as a Stigma here). Chrysler owns/ed Dodge and a part of Mitsubishi. When Chrysler gave up making cars in Australia they sold/gave the factories to Mitsubishi and we lost the big American style Valiant cars and they badged the Stigmas as Mitsubishi (exact same car). Mitsubishi then made a Colt (even smaller, think 1970s/80s Corolla/ Civic size.
Did your Colt have a 5 speed manual or a 4/speed dual range manual? That’s what we had here with 1.5 litre engine. Pretty much the only customers for the Colt were housewives and public authorities like the bus transit and electricity meter readers. Local Councils used them for cheap fleet cars also.
An orange 72 coupe was "transportation" between my 70 Dart Swinger 340 and my 73 Plymouth Satellite Sebring Plus. It had the auto... One of the FOUR - count 'em FOUR - options offered. Trading it in on the Plymouth was 1 of the happiest days in my life. 😉
Just looked it up. This was a 2 door version of the Mitsubishi Colt, not the Stigma. The Stigma was a comparative powerhouse. 2.6 litre engine. The one in my post was a special turbo version. A motoring “expert” criticised the Stigma’s handling and lack of power. Mitsubishi challenged him to improve it. The police used a few where I grew up.
Believe it or not, the turbocharged version was pretty decent for speed and cornering.
At one stage the police were thinking about replacing the motorbikes with the Colts though. The motorbike cops pretty much refused to cooperate (motorbike cops took their bikes home and didn’t have t9 share them).
