Its about a father riding a horse in the middle of a night with his sick son
His sob keeps telling him about the erlkonig, (erlkonig being death) a supernatural being calling him to join it
The poem (it originally was a poem before schubert made it in a piece) ends with the dead son in the father's arms and the father barely making it to the destination, hence why the music of the last movement is so dramatic
